Working on Cruise Ships

Ever wondered how is it like to work on one of the biggest cruise ships in the world? This is my experience, my life and my view as an employee on one of the many cruise ships sailing around the world.

First thing first

So you have this friend who works on a cruise ship and you’ve notice his improved life style. All of the sudden he can afford to buy brand clothes, go to the expensive bars and restaurants, go on vacation in all those exotic places you only dream of and you start feeling a little jealous of him/her. You want those things too, but you have no idea where to start from.

Here’s the first thing you should do. Go to a recruitment agency and talk to one of the people there. Is what I did long time a go. I went there and asked them how I can get a job on one of the cruise ships. They told me the options, I chose and several months later I embarked a small ship called Norwegian Dream.

It is very important to choose a well known, reliable agency in your country and when you get there asked them for their portfolio. Also, ask them about the commissions they’re taking and any other payments you have to make until you get the job. A solid, trustworthy company won’t ask for their commissions until you get your contract.

Some cruise lines employ directly themselves, others require you to apply through a local agency. For ships that cruise out of the UK, you will need to be at least 19, and for international ships, at least 21 years of age, hold a valid passport and not have a criminal record. Once employed, the company will make all the necessary travel arrangements, to and from ship, and any Visas that you may need. To work on a ship sailing out of the United States, you will need a C1/D Visa.

You can virtually apply for any position you want to as long as you have the back-up documentation showing you have related work experience in that field, but from my experience, if you’re not from USA, UK or any of the first world countries, you can only apply for entry level jobs such as waiter, assistant waiter, cook, front desk personnel, inventory store keeper, bar server or bartender, cruise staff, youth staff etc.

Don’t aim for managerial jobs, you’ll get disappointed. Most of the cruise lines prefer to promote from within for 2 big reasons:

1. they know and trust the person since that person are already working with the company for some time

2. they maintain the crew morale who sees that hard work is rewarded

Here you can find a list of cruise ship job employment agencies and here is the best agency in Romania, Job Selection.

I got a bunch of questions:
do you have web access aboard the ship?
do cellphones work on ship at sea?
how long does it take for a ship like you're on to dock/cast off?
is there a mini-supermarket where one can buy toiletries and similar things?
is there a ship's phone you can use to call home?
do you have a DVD library aboard?

    sorry for being too technical...

I'll answer then in the order you asked. So:
    1. no webcam access, security measure. The only webcam working is the official one you can find on Royal Caribbean official site, under the ship name you're interested in. Here's the one from my ship: http://www.royalcaribbean.com/multimedia/webcam/ship/voyager.do

    2. cellphones work on the ship only for guests. We need to go out on the open deck when the ship is docked

    3. takes less than an hour to dock, depending on the port we're in. Clearance of all passengers and crew takes longer sometimes.

    4. we do have a mini market, if you can call it that, but very basic. It's not worth, better wait to go out shopping for stuff

    5. each cabin has a phone. There are phone card machines we can use to buy calling card to call home, but it's expensive. Same as shopping, it's worth waiting to reach the port to call home

    6. We do have dvd players in our cabins, as well as a dvd rental center. I usually bring movies from home and share them with friends, and when they go home, they bring movies they share with me.

    Hope that answers your questions.

thanks, it does answer my questions!

I've always had a romantic image of cruise ship, no doubt due to the TV's Love Boat show. The reality must be a little bit different, though.
From your perspective, how many days it take for a couple to get bored with the cruise? We are thinking of going on one, one of us is an extremely mobile extrovert, and the other is an elitist social butterfly prima donna, and we look like snobs from NYC and nice stay-at-home sisters, all at the same time. What would we do on the cruise?

    Hello Kelly,

Sorry for such a late reply, but i just started my new contract and the past couple of weeks were hectic.

There are so many things to do onboard of a Royal Caribbean Ship that it's impossible to get bored. Here are a few, just to give you an idea:
    1. skate
    2. surf ( not on my ship though)
    3. spend the afternoon at the pool or jacuzzi
    4. go to the gym or spa
    5. various activities onboard such as cooking demo, etc
    6. play bingo
    7. mini golf
    8. watch movies in the screening room
    9. shows every night
    10. go to the disco
    11. you can go rock climbing
    12. take tours in the morning or afternoon and see the most amasing places (especially here in Europe)
    13. of course, you can go outside and explore by yourself the ports

We have everything and more here onboard, it's like a flating city and i am sure you won't get bored. I'm not, and i spend 6 months onboard each contract :-)

    Have a nice day!
    Oana

Well, cruise ship jobs are one of the best jobs as I have heard lately. They have said that lots of people are applying for a position that is why it is going to be difficult to compete with them specially if you don't have any on board experience. I like the fact that they are paid to travel and still with good benefits and no expense on board.
